Special Foods of 33 Provinces in Indonesia (Java part)


BANTEN


Bandeng Satai is from Banten. Bandeng satai is tender and doesn't have any bones, typically different from usual Bandeng fish and because of that, Bandeng satai becomes souvenir.

JAKARTA


Kerak telor is original food from Jakarta (Betawi). The ingredients are white glutinous rice, egg, ebi (salty dried shrimp) which is roasted and added by fried onion, and then seasoned by roasted coconut, red chilli, kencur, ginger, grain pepper, salt, and sugar.

JAWA BARAT (BANDUNG)

Serabi sometimes called Srabi or Surabi, is one of snacks from Indonesia and most found in Bandung, Solo, Pekalongan, Jakarta, and Purwokerto. Serabi is almost the same like pancake but made of rice flour and poured by watery sweet sauce from coconut sugar.

JAWA TENGAH (SEMARANG)

Lumpia Semarang is a food like rollade filling with bamboo sprout, egg, and chicken or shrimp. The taste is the mix of Tionghoa and Indonesia because firstly made by a chinese who marry an indonesian and live in Semarang, Middle Java. This food begins to be sold and known in Semarang at GANEFO sport party which is held in Soekarno era.

D.I. YOGYAKARTA

Gudeg is typical food from Yogyakarta and Middle Java which is made by young jackfruit cooked with coconut milk in hours. Brown colour is usually produced by cooking jati leaves alltogether. Gudeg is eaten with rice and served with thick coconut milk (areh), country chicken, egg, tofu, and krecek fried chilli sauce.

JAWA TIMUR (SURABAYA)

Rujak Cingur is one of traditional food from Surabaya (cingur means 'mouth' in java) which is boiled and mixed in dishes. Rujak cingur contains slices of fruit like cucumber, krai (typical cucumber from East Java), kedondong, yam, young mango, pineapple, rice cake, tofu, soybean cake, bendoyo, cingur, and vegetables such as spout, long bean, and kale. All of them mix with sauce that made of processed shrimp paste, boiled water to make it a bit watery, sugar/brown sugar, chilli, roasted nut, fried onion, salt, and thin slices of young green seed banana (pisang klutuk).

ACEH

Aceh Noodle is special spicy noodle from Indonesia. Yellow thick noodle with slices of beef,  mutton, or seafood served in a kind of savory and spicy soup. Aceh noodle is available in 2 kinds, Fried and Soup, also best serving with fried onion, crispy-mashed melinjo, cucumber, and nipis orange.

SUMATERA UTARA (MEDAN)

Bika Ambon is a kind of desert in Indonesia, made of egg, sugar, and coconut milk. Bika ambon is originally sold in pandan flavour, although now also available in durian, cheese,and chocolate flavour. Bika ambon is known as typical souvenir from Medan. On Mojopahit street, in Medan Petisah district, is a popular place which sell Bika Ambon the most, at least 40 shops. About the taste, absolutely delicious and sweet!

SUMATERA BARAT (PADANG)

Rendang (in Minang: Randang) is one of Minangkabau traditional cooking which uses beef and coconut milk as main ingredients and contains rich spices seasoning. This cooking with spicy taste is loved by all kinds of people and also easily found in every Padang Restourants in Indonesia, Malaysia, or other countries. It's well-known as Rendang Padang, that basically is Minang characteristical cooking. In 2011, Rendang was nobled as #1 food in World's 50 Most Delicious Foods list which was held by CNN International.

JAMBI

Gulai ikan patin (curry patin) is a well-known food in Jambi. This curry is cooked by fermented durian, but can be changed by coconut milk to prevent its sharp smell and taste. Other ingredients are red chilli, galangal, serai, turmeric, onion, and garlic.

BENGKULU

Pendap is typically from Bengkulu. This food is often hunted by tourists as souvenir to be brought to their places, especially on Eid. Pendap is made by various seasonings like garlic, kencur, and pepper mill. Then those ingredients are mixed evenly with grated young coconut.

RIAU

Gulai Belacan is one of characteristical foods from Riau which is made from soup mix with terasi (usually use mashed dried shrimp or fish).

RIAU KEPULAUAN

Otak-otak is one of the typical foods in Kepulauan Riau, either in Batam, Tanjung Pinang, or Penyengat island. There are 2 kinds of otak-otak, made of fish and squid that is more spicy. Otak-otak is covered with coconut leaf, and then burned on coals.

SUMATERA SELATAN

Pempek or Empek-empek is special food from South Sumatera which is made of fish and sago and usually eaten with "cuko" or black-brownies sauce. Cuko is made of water that is boiled and added by brown sugar, ebi, mashed chilli, garlic, and salt. In history, cuko was used to be spicy to increase appetite. Nowadays, cuko has been made in sweet flavour for whom doesn't like spicy taste. 1 litre cuko contains 9-13 ppm fluor that protects teeth from dental caries. It will be perfect with fresh dice-slice cucumber and noodle.

BANGKA BELITUNG

Bangka noodle is one of so much kinds of bangkanian's foods. Made of yellow noodle poured by seasoning sauce/soup which made of fish, shrimp, or crab, and usually added sprouts, cucumber, and fish chips. Delicious serving in warm temp. and hot taste of chilli.

LAMPUNG

Seruit is from Lampung province, Indonesia. A fried/burned fish with terasi sauce, fermented durian or mango. Seruit usually use river fish like belide, baung, layis, etc and mostly eaten with lalapan. Kwini mango juice will complete them.
